Archaeology Jennie Bradbury

Ph.D. Program in Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology

Department of Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology traces its origins to the founding of the College in 1885 and assumed its status as an independent department in 1914 with the appointment of Rhys Carpenter (1913-1955), after whom the award-winning art and archaeology library is named. Among comparable programs in North America, this department has a distinctive shape and strengths that are, 很大程度上, products of the way it has grown in the past hundred and thirty years. Its most remarkable and distinctive features are its autonomy and its breadth.

的 department is part of 的 研究生 Group in Archaeology, Classics and History of Art, which brings together 教师 and 学生 to encourage interdisciplinary study. While each department awards its own degrees, the 研究生 Group creates a collaborative 研究 environment and promotes a strong scholarly community among all of its graduate 学生.

研究领域

的 Department offers graduate 学生 the opportunity to study the ancient cultures of the Mediterranean and the Near East and to explore the interconnected histories and cultures of these areas. It is expected that 学生 will take a broad range of courses in these fields as they develop their programs of study in their major and allied subjects. Allied subjects are ancient languages (including Greek and Latin at Bryn Mawr and Sumerian and Akkadian at the University of Pennsylvania), 艺术史, 城市研究, 古老的历史, 人类学, or archaeological sciences related to the program of the student.

课程

的 graduate curriculum, which stresses both breadth and depth of study, has prepared 学生 for successful careers in a variety of fields, 包括教学, 研究, 出版, and work in museums and foundations.

研究生 instruction takes the form of seminars and tutorial units of supervised study. It is expected that 学生 will take a broad range of courses as they develop their programs of study in their major and allied subjects. Students are required to take one interdisciplinary seminar (GSem), which is offered by the 教师 of the 研究生 Group. 的y are also required to pass a reading examination in two modern languages, 通常用德语, 法语还是意大利语, to demonstrate their readiness to conduct 研究 to international standards. 的 two weekly series of lectures — the Classics Colloquium and the colloquium of the Center for Visual Culture — allow 学生 to hear prominent speakers discuss their current 研究 project and to engage with them in an 信息rmal atmosphere. Students are able to take courses at the University of Pennsylvania through a reciprocal agreement and also, by special arrangement, at Princeton University and other institutions in the area. Students are encouraged to take part in 实地考察项目 sponsored by the College and by other institutions, as well as to undertake 研究 abroad.

Additionally, the archaeology graduate 学生 annually organize the C. Densmore Curtis Lecture, selecting a speaker to give a public lecture and hold a seminar for the 学生.

学术资源

里斯·卡彭特图书馆 is named for the renowned classical archaeologist who taught at Bryn Mawr from 1913 through 1955. It houses approximately 125,000 volumes and 500 periodical titles supporting 研究 in archaeology, 艺术史, 经典, 城市研究. It also houses a plaster cast collection of ancient Greek sculpture and reliefs.
